Cancer is the first water sign and the second of the cardinal quality. Powerful emotions are blended with an equally strong imagination and intuition. The cardinal quality of the sign, however, offers control and discipline, often giving the ability to express love and emotion, and enabling Cancerians to spring to the defense of those they love and themselves.

Even though Cancerians can be sensitive, versatile and shy....they love publicity and the limelight. They are often influenced by kindness, consideration, sympathy; they fear criticism or ridicule. While outwardly giving the impression of self-assurance, they need security.
Like the symbol, the crab, they have a self-protective, hard outer shell to hide the sensitive, soft interior. They are attracted to the mysterious and occult and probably like astrology, strange adventure and the mysterious of nature, particularly on and in the sea.

Cancer rules the stomach area and emotions. They are changeable and therefore have experienced the vicissitudes of life, with many changes in occupation. They are extremely frugal, prudent and industrious. They are conscientious in their work and usually manage to squirrel away a fair portion of their earnings. Since Cancer has the most retentive memory in the zodiac, they never forget a cut or a kindness. Some of the best patriots and founders of fortune are born in this defensive, protective sign.

Cancerians are very complex individuals; at certain times they appear to have the strength of a giant and at other times they display the weakness of a child. This variability is due to the reversal of the Sun's direction in this sign: it stops in the northern skies and starts its trek southward.

As a rule, Cancers are well-intentioned, but because of their inconstant Moon they are at one moment sweet and charmingly outgoing (especially when they have some objective in mind) and at the next melancholic, introverted and distant.

They are noted for their diplomacy and seldom fail to achieve their goals. However, when they are hurt, they may behave in a nonsensical manner, being unable to collaborate with others.

Cancers desire the absolute possession of their beloved. It can be said of people under this sign that once a love is begun, it is never stopped. Resentment may make them cruel enemies, but they never stop loving.
